Strange House sits in an old pub yard on Evelyn Road, largely concealed from the street by an existing brick perimeter wall. The house is built from solid spruce panels fabricated in a Swiss factory and erected on site within a week. The windows, doors and internal fit-out are in FSC tropical hardwood from Nicaragua, felled by Hurricane Felix. Working with the existing site conditions, materials and furniture, the result is a warm and considered home. Completed in 2010, the house has been published internationally and has won awards from the RIBA, the AIA and the Wood Awards. In 2013 Solmaz built Hugh Strange Architects’ adjacent office, also in cross laminated timber and tropical hardwood.
