1. Our position

Construction and refurbishment have a material environmental impact. Solmaz Limited is committed to reducing that impact across our sites, our joinery workshop and our supply chain, and to complying with all applicable environmental legislation and the conditions attached to our planning and contractual obligations.

2. Materials and responsible sourcing

• We favour durable materials and detailing that extends the life of a building, since longevity is the most effective form of sustainability in our sector.
• Timber is sourced from responsibly managed and certified sources wherever possible.
• Our joinery unit works with reclaimed timber, including reclaimed Iroko, giving high-quality material a second life rather than sending it to waste.
• We assess suppliers on environmental performance alongside quality and price.

3. Waste and resources

• We apply the waste hierarchy: prevent, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose.
• Site waste is segregated where practicable and removed by licensed carriers, with duty of care documentation retained.
• Off-cuts and timber waste from the workshop are reused or recycled where possible.
• Deliveries are planned to reduce packaging, over-ordering and unnecessary vehicle movements.

4. Energy, water and emissions

We monitor energy and water use on our sites and in the workshop, use efficient plant and lighting, and avoid unnecessary running of equipment. Where our works include building services, we install and commission them so that the completed building performs as designed.

5. Protecting the local environment

On sites in residential areas and conservation areas, we control dust, noise, vibration, light spill and run-off, protect trees and existing fabric, and maintain clean access routes. Neighbours are informed in advance of noisy or disruptive operations wherever possible.

6. Refurbishment as reuse

A significant part of our work involves the repair, restoration and adaptation of existing and historic buildings. Retaining and upgrading existing structures conserves embodied carbon and heritage value at the same time, and we advise clients accordingly when options are being considered.

7. Responsibility and review

Directors are responsible for this policy and for providing the resources to implement it. Site management is responsible for day-to-day compliance. The policy is communicated to employees and subcontractors and reviewed at least annually.
